White Hat Link Building for iGaming Without Buying Links

TL;DR: In gambling verticals the usual free-backlink playbook is worse than doing nothing, because most of the directories that accept casino content are link farms. The three tactics that survived for us are unlinked mention reclamation, owned-hub links across properties we already control, and profile placements on platforms with real editorial gates. One warning that costs nothing to heed: a vendor that asks for your competitor list before quoting is charging you for an audit and keeping the intelligence. Our own domain sits at DR 12 with 458 referring domains as of 2026-08-24, and the cheapest ones came from mentions that already existed.

Link building advice splits into two useless halves. One half assumes you can guest post on mainstream publications, which gambling brands cannot. The other half is a list of 200 "free backlink sites" that are, on inspection, the same link farm under 200 hostnames.

What follows is the part in the middle that we actually run.

The vendor warning nobody puts first

When we evaluated a paid link vendor in 2026, the intake form asked for a list of our competitors before it would quote. That is a reasonable-looking request with an unreasonable consequence: handing over the referring-domain targets you care about tells the vendor exactly which placements are in demand in your niche, and those placements get sold to whoever pays more. We declined and priced the same outcome internally. Any vendor whose first ask is your competitor set is running an intelligence business with a link-building invoice attached.

The second warning is cheaper to state. If a vendor guarantees a domain rating number, they are selling links from sites that exist to sell links, which Google's spam policies name explicitly as link schemes. In a vertical already under extra scrutiny that is a bad trade at any price.

Safe versus toxic: the decision tree

We score a prospective link source on four questions before touching it. A no on any of the first three kills it.

QuestionSafe signalToxic signal
Does it get organic traffic?Traffic roughly tracks its referring domain countHigh referring domains, near-zero organic traffic
Is there an editorial gate?Submission is reviewed or requires an account with historyInstant publish, no review
Would you cite it to a client?Yes, it is a real resourceOnly useful as a link
Is the outbound profile coherent?Links out to things its readers wantLinks out to casinos, loans and crypto from one page

The traffic-versus-referring-domains test does most of the work. When we ran a vendor's own domain through Ahrefs Site Explorer on 2026-08-27 it returned 704 referring domains, 10,185 backlinks, and organic traffic of zero in the United States and worldwide. That is 704 referring domains converting into 0% of a visit. A domain with that shape is not an authority that happens to sell links, it is a link farm with a domain rating. Buying from it puts your site one hop from every other buyer.

Tactic one: reclaim mentions you already have

Brands get named without being linked far more often than anyone expects, and in gambling the ratio is worse because writers hedge. We run a scan that searches for the brand string across the open web, filters out our own properties and known aggregators, then checks each result for an outbound link back to us. Everything left is an unlinked mention, which is a link request with the hardest part already done: someone decided we were worth naming.

Conversion on these is far higher than cold outreach because you are asking for a correction rather than a favour. The email is two sentences and includes the exact URL you would like linked.

Tactic two: owned hubs

If you run more than one property, and most operators do, the links between them are free and permanent. The rule that keeps this from becoming a private blog network is that each property has to have an independent reason to exist: real traffic, real purpose, its own audience. Cross-linking three real sites is normal internal architecture. Cross-linking thirty shells is a PBN, and Google's link spam guidance does not care which word you use for it.

Our own portfolio review in August 2026 found several properties still linking to a site we decommissioned in July 2026, which was quietly leaking equity into a 404. Roughly 15% of the cross-links we checked pointed at a URL that no longer resolved. Auditing your own cross-links costs an afternoon and usually finds something.

Tactic three: profiles with real gates

The submission targets that have held up for us share one property: they require an account with history, so the spam volume is low enough that the platform stays worth something. Industry association listings, conference speaker pages, tool directories that require a working product, and developer platforms where you actually ship something all qualify. Generic web directories, article-spinning sites and "add your URL" pages do not, and in a regulated vertical they carry a second cost beyond the wasted effort: a manual reviewer looking at your profile sees the same pattern a spam operation would leave.

What we do not do

We do not disavow reflexively. Google discounts most low-quality links automatically, and the disavow tool documentation is explicit that it is for cases where you have a manual action or believe you are about to. We keep a list, we watch it, and we file only with cause.

We also do not chase referring domain count as a target. Our domain gained referring domains steadily through 2026 while organic traffic stayed under 120 visits per month worldwide, which is the same disconnect that flags a link farm. For context, our English pages convert impressions into clicks at about 0.60%, while our Traditional Chinese how-to pages run near 6%, so link volume is nowhere near the binding constraint. Links are an input. Traffic and rankings are the output, and only the output pays.

FAQ

Can iGaming sites do white hat link building at all? Yes, but the addressable set is around 10% of what an equivalent SaaS brand has. Reclamation, owned properties and gated profiles are the three that survive. Mainstream guest posting mostly is not available, and pretending otherwise wastes a quarter.

How many referring domains do I need? Fewer than the number you are being sold. In the top ten we pulled for igaming seo on 2026-08-27, 30% of ranking URLs had fewer than ten backlinks pointing at the ranking page itself, and one held position five from a domain rating of 0. Relevance and page-level signals move more than raw domain count at this scale.

Are casino link packages ever worth it? Only when the source passes the traffic-versus-referring-domains test above, which most do not. Run the check yourself before buying rather than accepting a metrics screenshot.

What is the fastest link we can get this month? An unlinked mention you already have. The scan takes an hour and the outreach is a two-sentence email, which makes it the cheapest link in the programme by a wide margin.

Does anchor text still matter? It matters enough to avoid over-optimising. Exact-match commercial anchors at volume are one of the clearest patterns in the spam policies, and in gambling they attract attention faster than elsewhere.

The vendor figures, the reclamation workflow and the portfolio audit findings above come from our own 2026 work and Ahrefs API pulls dated in the text. They are not in the sources above.
