TL;DR: Programmatic SEO fails in iGaming for a boring reason. Generating pages is cheap, earning indexation is not. Across our own portfolio we published 371 pages and, measured over a 90 day window ending 2026-08-24, 94 of them had zero impressions and 150 had five clicks or fewer between them. 35 pages carried 93.5% of all clicks. The fix is a pre-publish gate, not a bigger generator: every templated page needs one field that no competitor can copy, and you need a kill rule for the ones that never earn a click.
Programmatic SEO gets sold as a volume play. Pick a template, pick a data set, multiply. In regulated verticals that model breaks earlier than it does anywhere else, and the failure is quiet: pages get crawled, get a URL in the sitemap, and then sit at zero forever.
We ran that experiment on ourselves rather than on a client.
What we measured
Our own domain had 371 published pages by August 2026. We pulled Search Console page-level data for the 90 days to 2026-08-24 and sorted by clicks. 35 pages, 9.4% of the library, accounted for 93.5% of clicks. 150 pages, just over 40% of the library, produced five clicks in total across the whole quarter. 94 pages had never recorded a single impression. On 2026-08-25 we removed 94 files: 17 were redirected into a surviving near-duplicate and 77 were deleted outright.
That is not a content quality story. Most of those pages were competent. It is an indexation and demand story: we generated pages for queries that either had no search demand or already had a stronger destination answering them.

Why iGaming makes this worse
Two things compound in gambling verticals.
First, geo-restriction cuts your addressable index before you write anything. A casino brand licensed for three markets cannot publish the other forty market pages that the template would happily generate, and publishing them anyway produces pages that rank in countries you cannot convert.
Second, Google treats the vertical with more suspicion than average. The Search Essentials spam policies↗ name scaled content abuse directly: pages generated at volume that exist primarily to manipulate rankings rather than to help a user. A template that swaps a game name into eight otherwise identical paragraphs is exactly the pattern that definition describes, and gambling sites get looked at harder.
The result is a portfolio where the generator works perfectly and the business result is zero.
The gate we run now
We kept programmatic generation. We added a gate in front of it. A templated page ships only if it passes all four of these.
1. Verified demand at the row level. Every row in the source data set has to carry a real search volume number pulled at generation time, not an assumption that "long tail exists". We pull these through the Ahrefs API and store the volume, difficulty and pull date in the row itself. Rows below the threshold do not generate a page, they generate a section inside an existing page.
2. One field the competition cannot copy. If every fact on the page comes from the same public source everyone else scrapes, the page is an intermediary and a reader is better served by the source. Our rule is that each generated page must carry at least one field computed from our own data: a payout observation, a real campaign benchmark, a measured load time. Without that field the row is skipped.
3. A crawl budget check. Adding 400 URLs to a site with 458 referring domains does not get 400 URLs crawled. We cap generated pages at a ratio to existing indexed pages and stage releases instead of publishing the whole set at once.
4. A kill rule agreed before launch. Any generated page with zero impressions after 12 weeks gets consolidated or removed. Writing that rule down before publishing is what stopped the last cleanup from becoming an argument.
What indexation actually looked like
Working backwards from the same data set, our effective indexation rate on templated pages was 74.7% (277 of 371 pages had at least one impression), and our effective useful indexation rate, meaning pages that earned at least one click in 90 days, was 34.2%. Those two numbers are far apart, and the gap is where programmatic SEO budgets die. A page that is indexed and never clicked costs crawl budget, dilutes internal link equity, and shows up in nobody's report as a failure.
If you only track "are my pages indexed", you will call this project a success at 74.7% and miss that two thirds of it is dead weight.
Working the same idea in reverse
The version of programmatic SEO that has worked for us is narrower and less satisfying. Instead of generating a page per entity, we generate a section per entity inside a page that already ranks, and we only split a section out into its own URL once Search Console shows that section pulling impressions on its own query set.
That inverts the usual order. You earn the URL rather than assuming it. It is slower, it produces maybe a tenth of the page count, and in our library those pages are disproportionately represented in the 35 that carry the clicks.

FAQ
Is programmatic SEO against Google's guidelines? No, generating pages from a database is not itself a violation. Generating pages whose primary purpose is ranking rather than helping a user is, and that is the line the spam policies↗ draw. The practical test is whether the page carries information a reader cannot get from the source you generated it from.
How many programmatic pages can a new site publish? Fewer than the generator can produce. We stage releases against existing indexed page count rather than publishing a full set, because crawl allocation follows site authority. Google's crawl budget guidance↗ is the reference we size against.
How do I know if my generated pages are working? Split the report. Indexation rate and click rate are different questions, and in our own portfolio they differed by 40 percentage points. Track both in Search Console↗ at the page level, not at the property level.
What do I do with pages that never earned an impression? Consolidate the ones with a near-duplicate twin using a 301, and remove the rest. We do not use robots.txt disallow for this, because a blocked URL cannot be re-crawled to read a noindex tag, so the page stays in the index in a worse state than before.
Does this apply outside iGaming? The indexation maths does. The geo-restriction and extra scrutiny parts are specific to regulated verticals, and they are what turn a merely inefficient programmatic build into a compliance problem.
