GEO agencies suddenly seem to be everywhere, so how do you tell who actually does the work from who rebadged SEO↗?
TL;DR: Choosing a GEO agency is not about who shouts "get recommended by ChatGPT" loudest. Judge 5 things: whether they can explain how success is tracked (mention rate, citation rate, sentiment, not a vague "more exposure"); whether the content they deliver is genuinely AI-liftable (self-contained passages, sourced, tabled facts); what the price includes (build, maintenance, weekly checks, weekly articles, monitoring, or just a few articles); whether monitoring spans multiple AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews); and whether they will show method and samples before you sign. In one line: a real GEO provider can show your actual record of being named in AI answers, not just a pile of keyword rankings.
Why GEO agencies are hard to judge
GEO was formally named in academic work in 2024 and went mainstream in the market by 2026, so supply is messy: some genuinely do AI-citation work, others rebadge existing SEO. The buyer's hardest problem is that GEO success has no ready-made rank tool. With SEO you check Google yourself; with GEO you have to ask ChatGPT and Perplexity to know whether you are recommended, and the answer can vary each time. That opacity is where weak providers hide. So choosing a GEO agency is really about forcing them to make the opaque explicit.
The shortlists you find by searching are part of that opacity. Reading the six GEO agency rankings that ChatGPT and Perplexity actually cited in September 2026, five of the six place their own agency first, and only one publishes the weighting behind its scores. If you want the named comparison rather than the criteria, our own ranking — best GEO, AEO and AI SEO agencies for 2026 — lists ten providers with published fees where they exist, and shows the scoring weights so you can re-run the maths and disagree with where we placed ourselves.
The 5 standards
Standard 1: can they explain how success is tracked
The first and most important filter. Ask: "How do you prove I got recommended by the AI?"
- Good answer: we use a fixed set of core questions, test them on a schedule across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews, and report your mention rate, citation rate, and sentiment monthly.
- Warning answer: a vague "AI exposure will rise" with no way to measure it.
You can also measure your own starting point before signing: the free AI visibility check asks ChatGPT 3 buyer questions and lists the brands it recommends, so you can later compare it against the agency's monthly report.
Standard 2: is the content genuinely AI-liftable
Ask for a sample. Real GEO content is visibly different: self-contained passages, dated, sourced, tabled facts. If they hand you an adjective-heavy SEO essay, that is not GEO content.
Standard 3: what the price actually includes
GEO pricing varies widely, and the key is whether it is all-in. The published rates we could verify on 21 September 2026 span an order of magnitude: SEOProfy starts at $1,600/month, WebFX posts $3,000/month, Digital Elevator posts $3,000–$3,500/month, and NoGood states an average retainer above $20,000/month. Two providers publish market surveys rather than their own card: First Page Sage puts observed tiers at $2,000–$3,000, $4,000–$7,000 and $8,000–$12,000 per month, and WebFX's cost guide spans $1,500 to $50,000+. Break it down: if provider A is half the price but only "4 articles a month," and provider B costs more but includes build, maintenance, weekly checks, and monitoring, B's unit cost can be lower. Do not compare only the total, compare who actually moves your AI mention rate over a year. The logic mirrors general agency selection, see our ad agency guide for the shared reasoning.
Standard 4: does monitoring span platforms
AI search is not just ChatGPT. Users also use Perplexity and see Google's AI Overviews. GEO that watches only ChatGPT is incomplete. Ask which engines they monitor, at least 3: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews.
Standard 5: will they show method before you sign
Like judging a managed ad buyer, a GEO agency's credibility shows in whether they open the method before you sign. Providers willing to show how they pick core questions, how they monitor, and what deliverables look like usually have a real methodology; those offering only "trust us, just sign" deserve caution. GEO is a long-term, 6–12 month service, so nailing down the acceptance standard (how mention rate is measured, how often checks run) up front beats arguing later.
Pre-contract checklist
Before signing a GEO contract, walk this table item by item:
| Check | Answer to hear |
|---|---|
| Success metric | explicit mention rate, citation rate, sentiment, monthly report |
| Monitoring platforms | 3+ (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews) |
| Content sample | offered, and visibly self-contained + sourced |
| Price scope | written out (build/maintenance/articles/checks/monitoring) |
| Core questions | agreed together, not set unilaterally |
| Before signing | willing to open method and acceptance standard |
