WhatsApp Business Verification 2026: Two Routes to the Badge
WhatsApp Business Verification 2026: Two Routes to the Badge
TL;DR: Two routes lead to a verified WhatsApp business account and both end in a blue checkmark. The free one is Official Business Account status, for which Meta publishes exactly five requirements: comply with the messaging policy, 30 days on the WhatsApp Business Platform, a business portfolio that has completed Business Verification, two-step verification on the number, and an approved display name. The widely repeated notability requirement is not among them. Rejection costs a 30-day wait. The paid route is Meta Verified for Business from $14.99/month, which carries WhatsApp verified channels at every tier and no cooling-off period. Numbers on the WhatsApp Business app qualify for neither.
Most guides to WhatsApp business verification describe one path and treat it as the only one. There are two, they cost very differently, and both end with the same blue checkmark next to your business name.
Everything below was checked against Meta's own developer documentation and business help pages on 3 August 2026.
Three things people keep confusing
Before the process, the vocabulary, because getting this wrong wastes weeks.
| Term | What it is | Gives you a badge? |
|---|---|---|
| Business Verification | Proving your company exists, inside Meta Business Suite | No |
| Official Business Account (OBA) | The free verified badge on WhatsApp | Yes |
| Meta Verified for Business | Paid subscription that includes WhatsApp verified channels | Yes |
Meta states this outright: verifying your business in Meta Business Suite "is different from Meta Verified for business and doesn't grant a verified badge." Business Verification is a prerequisite for the badge and for a range of other features. It is not the badge itself.
One more piece of housekeeping: the badge used to be green and the industry still calls it "the green tick." Meta's current documentation describes OBA phone numbers as having "a blue checkmark beside their name in the contacts view."
Route one: Official Business Account, free
Meta's developer documentation↗ lists five requirements. All five must hold:
- The business must comply with the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy
- The business must be registered on the WhatsApp Business Platform for at least 30 days
- The business portfolio that owns the number must have completed Business Verification
- The business phone number must have two-step verification enabled
- The number's display name must be approved
Three categories are explicitly excluded: business employees' personal numbers, test accounts, and WhatsApp Business app phone numbers. That last exclusion is the one that stops most small businesses cold. The green app you download on a phone does not qualify. The number has to be on the WhatsApp Business Platform, either through Meta's Cloud API directly or through an approved Solution Partner.
You request the status in WhatsApp Manager under Phone numbers > Profile > Official business account, with two-step verification already switched on, or through the Official Business Account Status API by requesting the official_business_account field.
If you're rejected, you must wait 30 days before submitting another request. Meta notes that a rejection doesn't limit your ability to share business details through your business profile — the account keeps working, it just has no badge.
About the "3 to 5 press mentions" requirement
Agencies and BSP blogs widely repeat that OBA needs a notability case backed by independent press coverage. We compared that against Meta's current documentation: it is not among the five listed requirements.
The charitable reading is that notability was a practical hurdle in earlier review cycles and the folklore stuck. We can't prove Meta ignores notability internally. What we can say is that the published requirements today are five mechanical checks, and if you're quoting a timeline to a client, quote it off those five rather than off a press-clipping hunt.
Business Verification: the step that takes 14 days
Requirement three is where the calendar goes. Worth pulling apart on its own.
Prerequisite: you need full control of the business portfolio, which is the highest permission level. If you can't reach the Security Center, your permissions are the problem. Meta also notes that businesses paying for ads by monthly invoicing don't need to submit documents and can instead supply credit line information in the form.
The flow, on a desktop browser:
- Go to the Security Center in Meta Business Suite and click Start Verification
- Enter your legal business name, address, phone number and website
- Confirm the details. If no matching record is found, choose the "my business isn't listed" option and upload official documents such as a business licence or articles of incorporation
- Confirm your relationship to the business by email, phone, SMS, WhatsApp message, or domain verification
- Confirm and submit
Meta says a decision can take up to 14 business days, with a notification when review completes.
Two details cause avoidable failures. Your business website must load and must be served over HTTPS. And if you edit your business details after verifying, you have to run the whole verification process again — so settle the address and phone number before you submit, not after.
Meta also warns that submitting false or misleading information, claiming a business you aren't authorised to represent, or otherwise circumventing its review systems can block verification, strip existing verified status, or trigger further action on the account. Not a rule to probe.
Route two: pay for it
This is the part almost nobody writes about. Every tier of Meta Verified for Business includes an allowance of WhatsApp verified channels. It's published on Meta's business pricing page↗, but that page reads like an Instagram product, so WhatsApp teams rarely open it.
| Tier | Monthly (USD) | WhatsApp verified channels | Linked devices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Standard | $14.99 | 1 | 4 |
| Business Plus | $49.99 | 3 | 6 |
| Business Premium | $149.99 | 5 | 8 |
| Business Max | $499.99 | 10 | 10 |
Meta is specific about where the badge lands: subscribing a WhatsApp asset shows the badge on the WhatsApp business profile, at the top of chats, and in channels.
Watch the billing unit. Each tier carries the line that the price "applies to one Facebook Page, Instagram account, or WhatsApp phone number." One number, one subscription. Two support numbers, two subscriptions. The only published discount is 20% off the combined total when you subscribe on both Facebook and Instagram, and WhatsApp is not part of that bundle.
Full pricing across both product lines is broken down in our Meta Verified cost guide.
Choosing between the two WhatsApp business verification routes
Already on the WhatsApp Business Platform with Business Verification done: go for the free OBA. The five conditions are mechanical. Fix them and submit.
In a hurry, or sitting out a 30-day rejection wait: the paid subscription is Meta's own documented alternative. It doesn't ask you to argue notability and it isn't bound by the OBA cooling-off period.
Already buying Meta Verified for Instagram and Facebook: adding the WhatsApp number is a smaller marginal decision than opening a subscription just for WhatsApp.
Running only the WhatsApp Business app on a phone: neither route is open to you yet. Your first decision is Cloud API versus a Solution Partner, which is an architecture question rather than an application question.
Where applications usually stall
Display name rejected. The easiest of the five to underestimate. The name needs a recognisable relationship to the legal entity. A marketing nickname unconnected to the registered company gets stuck here.
Two-step verification not enabled. It's set at the phone-number level, not the account level. Without it the submit button in WhatsApp Manager doesn't even light up.
Miscounting the 30 days. The clock starts when the number is registered on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Not when the company was founded, not when someone installed an app.
Business details that don't match public records. The single biggest source of delay in that 14-day window. Legal name, address, phone and website should corroborate each other across your company registration, your own site, and your business listings.
Does any of this protect your ad account?
Partly, and not in the way people assume.
Business Verification genuinely matters to advertisers. Meta's help page opens by stating you must complete business verification to access certain advertising, developer, billing and spending features. That one is worth doing on its own merits.
The badge, on the other hand, does nothing for ad account stability. Meta publishes no link between a verification badge and ad review or enforcement. Those run through the Advertising Standards and Account Quality, a separate machine with its own logic. If disabled ad accounts are the actual problem, start with what to do when a Facebook ad account is disabled, or run a diagnostic with our ad account health card.
FAQ
Is WhatsApp business verification free?
There are two routes. Official Business Account status is free once you meet five official requirements. Meta Verified for Business is a paid subscription from $14.99 to $499.99 USD per month, and every tier includes an allowance of WhatsApp verified channels. Both result in a blue checkmark.
What are the requirements for a verified WhatsApp business account?
Meta lists five: comply with the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy; be registered on the WhatsApp Business Platform for at least 30 days; own the number through a business portfolio that has completed Business Verification; have two-step verification enabled on the number; and have an approved display name. Employee numbers, test accounts and WhatsApp Business app numbers are excluded.
Can I get verified using the WhatsApp Business app?
No. Meta explicitly excludes WhatsApp Business app phone numbers from Official Business Account eligibility. The number must be on the WhatsApp Business Platform, through the Cloud API or an approved Solution Partner.
How long does Business Verification take?
Meta says a decision on your submission can take up to 14 business days, with a notification once review completes. You'll enter your legal business name, address, phone number and website, and upload documents such as a business licence if public records don't match. Your website must load over HTTPS.
What happens if my application is rejected?
For OBA, you must wait 30 days before submitting another request. Meta notes the rejection doesn't limit your ability to share business details through your profile. Use the wait to fix the display name, two-step verification and Business Verification records, or switch to the paid subscription, which isn't bound by that cooling-off period.
Does completing Business Verification give me the badge?
No. Meta states that verifying your business in Meta Business Suite is different from Meta Verified for business and does not grant a verified badge. It's a prerequisite for OBA and a prerequisite for advertising and developer features, but it carries no badge of its own.
Is the WhatsApp subscription covered by the Facebook and Instagram discount?
No. The only published discount is 20% off the combined total for subscribing on both Facebook and Instagram. WhatsApp isn't included, and pricing is per Page, per Instagram account, or per WhatsApp phone number, so multiple support numbers mean multiple subscriptions.
Requirements and pricing verified against Meta's official documentation in August 2026. Meta revises these rules frequently, so treat the official pages as authoritative.
