What Are ChatGPT Ads? Placement, Who Sees Them, and How They Differ From Search Ads

Have you noticed a small sponsored box under a ChatGPT answer? That is a ChatGPT ad.

TL;DR: ChatGPT ads are sponsored units OpenAI began testing in February 2026, placed below the assistant's answer, labeled sponsored, and kept visually separate from the AI response. The creative has five fields: advertiser name, favicon, headline, description, and image, linking to your landing page. The single most important fact, and the one most guides get wrong, is who sees them: ads appear only to Free and Go users. Paid Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users see no ads at all. Selection is not exact keyword matching. It blends the current conversation context, your landing page and copy, and the ad group's context hints, so there is no guarantee your ad shows in any specific chat. Overall it behaves like an intent-driven search ad, not a replacement for Meta-style social reach.

Where the ad sits and what fields it has

The placement is directly below the assistant's answer. It does not interrupt the answer or disguise itself as the AI. Five creative fields:

FieldRole
Advertiser nameWho is running it
FaviconBrand icon
HeadlineMain message
DescriptionSupporting detail
ImageVisual

The layout looks a lot like a Google search ad. That is not a coincidence: the product logic sits close to search, not close to a Facebook feed.

Who sees ChatGPT ads?

This is the detail most guides get wrong. Ads show only to Free and Go users.

  • Free and Go: see ads.
  • Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu: no ads at all.
  • Accounts assessed as under 18: excluded.
  • Temporary Chat: no ads.

From a buyer's seat, this rule decides whether the placement fits you. You are buying the attention of people who have not upgraded yet. For mid-to-low ticket white products, electronics, everyday goods, jewelry, that audience converts fine. But if your product needs a buyer who happily pays $20 a month for Plus, this placement structurally cannot reach them. No creative fixes a placement limit. Before choosing products, ask whether more than half your customers sit on the Free/Go side.

Why your ad may not appear where you expect

Many advertisers assume that buying "jewelry" puts them next to every jewelry conversation. It does not. Selection blends three inputs:

  1. The current conversation context.
  2. Your landing page, headline, and copy.
  3. The ad group's context hints, which are topic hints, not exact keywords.

There is no guarantee of a specific chat, and advertisers only receive aggregate performance, never chat content.

Here is a detail the roundups skip. OpenAI said its ad business hit a $1 billion annualized run rate by 31 August 2026, yet that is still only about 2.5% of total revenue, so this is an early channel, not a mature one. Trade coverage from AdExchanger through 2026 reported that early advertisers often could not spend their budgets, because frequency and inventory were thin rather than because they were unwilling to pay. So the flip side of the selection logic is that available inventory is still shallow: even strong relevance is capped by how many suitable conversations exist. Official CPM and CPC numbers do not tell you that.

Put the audience limit into 1 number and the decision gets easy. The placement reaches only Free and Go users, so if fewer than 5 in 10 of your customers sit on the unpaid side, the ceiling is structural. Weigh it against price bands: a $300–3,000 white product (electronics, everyday goods, jewelry) maps well onto the Free/Go crowd, while a product needing a buyer who pays $20 a month for Plus loses that audience entirely. Add the 3 selection inputs and the 5 creative fields, and you have the full model: 1 placement, 2 tiers that see it, 3 inputs that decide when, 5 fields to fill. In a mixed budget, treat ChatGPT ads as roughly a 10% test line while Meta stays the base, and if you go managed, add about a 3–5% service fee on top of media.

One-line positioning: ChatGPT ads are a new variant of the intent-driven search ad, not a substitute for social reach. FAQ

What are ChatGPT ads? Sponsored units below the ChatGPT answer, labeled sponsored, tested from February 2026 and now in 40+ countries. Creative includes advertiser name, favicon, headline, description, image, and landing page.

Do all ChatGPT users see ads? No. Only Free and Go users. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu see none.

Will my ad appear in a conversation I target? Not guaranteed. Selection blends conversation context, your landing page and copy, and ad-group context hints, not exact keyword matching.

Are ChatGPT ads the same as Google search ads? The layout and high intent are similar, but the trigger differs: search ads fire on the keyword a user types, ChatGPT ads fire on the current conversation context.

Verification: placement, plans, and selection logic checked 2026-09 (OpenAI ad policy, help.openai.com); inventory and early advertiser feedback from AdExchanger 2026; revenue context from Quartz. ChatGPT ads change fast; defer to OpenAI's latest announcements.
